It’s something that, frankly, I think is very misunderstood in this industry (especially by young entrepreneurs!)…
And that’s SUCCESS.
What is it? How do we get it? Is it flashy clothes and a Lamborghini? (Hint: No and no!)
In this interview, Ryan shares his views on success, and why he chooses to pursue enjoyment over progress.

“So many people think that success is about money, which is silly…
Because success is the fuel that you need to do whatever you want to do.
But so many people in our marketing world — you marketers, you know you’re guilty of this! — think that it’s all about getting the fuel.
‘I want more gasoline to power my…’
No. Success is the car. It’s enjoying the drive. That’s what success is…
And too many people get lost in the contest of who has more than the other person… It becomes a big comparison game, and that’s not success.
Because as soon as you’re comparing yourself to other people, you’ve lost the point.
Success is you getting better all the time and you enjoying the process more every day.
The truth is, when you get money, all of the things that you’re insecure about that you think will go away, get amplified.
In the last year, I’ve done a lot of rediscovery of where do I want to be spending my time…
Because that is success. It’s what we’re all after. It’s freedom.
I once heard said, ‘Freedom is not the ability to do what you love; it’s doing what you love.’
We so often chase the pursuit of freedom, and no one is talking about how to ENJOY freedom.
I had a mentor say once that your primary job as an entrepreneur is to stay in that space where work is easy…
And we so often are focused on the hustle — on using force to do things that we hate doing — then we wonder why we’re unhappy even when we’re ‘successful.’
So my focus is being in that sweet spot, because I know that’s where I provide the most value.
And if entrepreneurs were to do THAT more often, we’d be unstoppable.
You’re in this game for freedom and enjoyment and ultimately who you spend your time with — at work, at home, in your free time… it’s all the same — so be intentional about who you play this game with and who you bring on.
It’s not just about the monetary goal, because the monetary goal is there to make you enjoy your life.
So if given the choice of enjoying the process or getting a little further ahead and hating the process, I’ll take the enjoyment.”
