Top AI Marketing Hacks: Swipeable Prompts for Killer Ad Copy & Avatar Research

Hey guys! Pepijn here, CEO of the Smart Marketer Agency.

I rarely post on the blog, but I wanted to share some thoughts and strategies to help you embrace AI in your business.

The pace of AI innovation is nothing short of wild, and the opinions on the subject are quite divisive: many people find these changes disturbing, while I think most of us feel something in between nervous and inspired.

But for me, this is the big takeaway: no matter how you feel about AI, it’s here to stay. And it’s already changing the business landscape, so we have to be experimenting, adapting, and figuring out how to leverage AI to help us reach our goals.

So in this post, I’m going to share:

  • 6 ways AI can help support your business right now
  • The 4 ingredients of a great AI prompt (with real templates I use on a daily basis)
  • How to use AI to quickly produce killer ad copy & better understand your audience, and more!

The more you think about AI as your personal assistant the less daunting it becomes, and the more able you’ll be able to unlock their potential.

Now, let’s talk about how we can use AI in business!

6 Ways AI Can Support Your Business

Before we dive into specific tactics, here’s a quick overview of the different tasks you can get AI to help you with.

  1. Customer service. AI can handle customer inquiries 24/7 without needing a break. You can train ChatGPT (or any large language model) to handle customer support so customers can get responses to their questions immediately.
  2. Content Creation. AI can help you generate fresh content ideas for blog posts, video scripts, social media posts, and ad copy (more on that in a moment). This is great news for marketers since there is never enough content, right?
  3. Personalized Experiences. ChatGPT can be integrated into websites or apps to offer personalized recommendations or assistance. It can help online shoppers decide the best product based on their preferences or past behaviors. We’re working on this right now and will keep you posted.
  4. Market Research. AI can analyze large volumes of data from social media and across the Internet to identify trends and insights to help us understand what customers are actually interested in and concerned about. (Again, more on this in a moment.)
  5. Automation! Need help with repetitive tasks like sending emails, generating reports, and answering specific questions? Automate these to free up your employees to focus on more complex issues.
  6. Data Analysis. ChatGPT is amazing at this. It can visualize data and help us get important insights in a fraction of the time.

All this being said, the 2 main things we’re using AI for right now at the Smart Marketer Agency are:

  1. Ad copywriting, and…
  2. Customer avatar research

Now I’m going to share the exact prompts so you can use them in your business. I have to tell you, these things have been incredible time-savers, and I don’t think we’ll ever go back!

The 4 Ingredients in Every Great ChatGPT Prompt

I’m pretty sure everyone here is familiar with ChatGPT

Obviously, a lot of other large language models are being rolled out, but for now, we’re going to focus on this application because it’s really easy to use.

But listen, guys, ChatGPT isn’t an oracle that can read your mind (at least not yet). The quality of your input will equal the quality of its output. So you have to think hard about how to give ChatGPT the right instructions — a.k.a., “prompts.”

I’ll give you the exact prompts I use for avatar research in a moment, but first, here are the 4 keys to writing excellent prompts (which will help you with whatever you’re trying to accomplish):

  1. Context: Provide background information.
  2. Goal: Clearly state what you want to achieve.
  3. Format: Specify the desired output format.
  4. Examples: Include examples to guide the AI’s response.

If you can check those four boxes, you’ll create a fairly high-quality prompt and get much better results. You’ll see this in action below.

Now let’s get specific and discuss how we’re using ChatGPT to write ad copy.

How to Use AI to Write Killer Ad Copy

No, we’re not replacing our copywriters. ChatGPT is a tool we can all use — especially copywriters!

Using the 4 keys above, let me show you how we use ChatGPT to produce killer ad copy.

  • Step 1: Generally, I like to start with a rule prompt, which is our context. For example, I’ll tell ChatGPT to “act like you’re a Direct Response Advertising Expert.”
  • Step 2: Next, I’m going to give it a goal, and I’m going to say something like, “Hey, you are here to help me write a high-converting Facebook ad to help me advertise XYZ (whatever you’re selling).”

Keep in mind that ChatGPT 4 can browse the Internet, so you can paste your product page into ChatGPT so that it completely understands what you’re selling.

  • Step 3: Then I’m going to tell it more about the format I want. For example, “Write me two pieces of ad copy using short sentences and easy-to-understand language.”

I’m specific about this because I want to ensure that my ad copy is easy to read and understand.

  • Step 4: Lastly, I’m going to give ChatGPT examples of our other high-converting ads.

ChatGPT will understand it! It gets the format. It can detect the tone of voice, and based on the information you provide, it will give an output that considers those examples.

Sometimes, it’s like magic. I can’t believe the result. Other times, it needs tweaking. Think about it like a conversation: you can provide ChatGPT with feedback and instructions, such as “Please rewrite this in a more playful tone of voice.”

So, guys, this is a powerful tool when you have more copy tasks than copywriters, when you can’t yet afford a copywriter, when your copywriter is sick or overrun, or when you just want a fresh place to start.

Now, let’s talk about using ChatGPT for customer avatar research.

How to Use AI to Understand Your Audience Like Never Before with Customer Avatar Research

The key to effective marketing is understanding your audience – their needs, preferences, and pain points.

What do they care about?

Traditionally, media buyers have spent hours researching and digging into the different personalities, traits, and signatures of different avatars for every product and for every client. It’s so time-consuming!

But with ChatGPT, we’ve streamlined the process to gain invaluable insights in a fraction of the time.

And instead of explaining it to you, I’m giving you the actual ChatGPT prompts I use with instructions to help you adjust them to your audience.

These prompts will help you:

  • Find unique avatars to target in your marketing
  • Understand what makes these avatars tick, including their fears and desires
  • Motivate these avatars to take action by speaking to their desired transformation

(And remember, think about it like a dialogue with ChatGPT. That’s the key to getting the best output possible.)
